You will soon be able to use Google Assistant to hail an Uber or Lyft ride. Yep, you read that right. Google today announced that it is rolling out an update for Google Assistant that will allow users to easily book a cab using any of their supported ride-hailing services using the voice assistant.
Google Assistant will be able to book rides from Uber, Ola, Grab, GO-JEK, and many other popular ride-hailing services. To book a ride, all you need to do is say “Hey/Ok Google, book a ride to the airport”. You will then be displayed an estimated fare along with wait times from various services. Depending on your preference then, you can select one of the ride-hailing services which will then lead to their app opening for booking confirmation.
Alternatively, you can explicitly tell Assistant to book an Uber or Lyft ride for you by saying “Hey Google, book a Lyft ride to SFO.”
The UI is similar to what one would get in Google Maps. Google is now simply showing this information directly within Assistant thereby making it more useful.
Google is first rolling out this feature in English and in any country where one of the supported ride partners operate. It plans on expanding this feature to more languages in the coming months. The feature will also be available on Android, iPhone, Google Home, and any other smart speaker running Assistant.
